Become a Good Speller

  1. Step 1

Read often. Part of correct spelling involves being able to recognize and remember the spelling of words. This will be easier if you're familiar with and constantly exposed to words, their pronunciations and spellings.

  2. Step 2

Look up any word you question when handwriting something. Use a standard bound dictionary or one of many convenient online dictionaries. If you make a habit of doing this, you'll find where your common errors lie in addition to learning new words.

  3. Step 3

Always use the spell check function on a standard word processor. When seeing what the spell checker picks up, pay attention to the mistakes it finds. You can learn from them and prevent repeating the same spelling errors in the future.

  4. Step 4

Have a strategy when trying to spell a word you find difficult. Sounding it out, counting syllables and recognizing which letters are typically associated with certain sounds helps.

  5. Step 5

Use your visual memory when looking at a word to get a sense as to whether or not it's spelled right.

  6. Step 6

Make it fun. Use word searches, crossword puzzles and other word based games to build your vocabulary and improve your spelling.

  7. Step 7

Write more. Keep a journal or take notes at classes and meetings to find more opportunities to spell both new and common words. Always review your writing and check for spelling mistakes.

  8. Step 8

Have a friend or family member check your writing to make suggestions for improvement. They may notice a pattern or a particular area you can improve upon.
